Tournament Post-Mortem
Well, Mrs. PokerShark and I played in another tourney today, a $30+5 winner-take-all event at the VFW. I finished 20th of 33 and she finished 10th. I am so proud of how far she's come. She played aggressively and won her share of pots by bluffing, and won her share of pots with cards. She's quickly becoming a top-notch player.
For me, well, this should summarize my tourney: At one point, I went 15 straight hands without seeing any card over 9. No pairs, suited connectors once (6-7). All garbage. I was being blinded out slowly, and I was down to T65 when I was dealt pocket 7's. This was the best hand I was dealt all day (in 2+ hours). I raised pre-flop, was re-raised, and called all-in by a player who had hit 4 straight river hands. This guy was playing nothing. He won with 7-3o, J-2o, things like that. So imagine my dismay when he turns over pocket 9's. He hit a third 9 on the flop, and I was finished. And so it goes. I shouldn't be dismayed by this, even though I've had my ass handed to me on consecutive live events. Live and learn, right?
Overall, I think I played very well, I feel that both of us were beat by lucky cards late in hands, and we played well despite our standings.
Now, I'd like to hear Negreanu, Lederer, or somebody explain to me the following:
1) What does a player do when they are being dealt constant trash?
2) How does a skilled player deal with constantly being beat by unskilled luck?
